To the right is a picture of Pat's wife Kathy holding up his latest project. It's a 1/2 scale Nike Ajax. When complete, it will be 15' 3" tall and weigh in at approximately 83 pounds. Its estimated altitude is around 22,000 feet. It will be launched with an M1939 in the booster and an M1315 in the upper stage.
The rocket motors use a composite propellant that is basically the same as what is in the Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters. The M1939 is 4" in diameter, it's about 34" long and weighs 19.5 pounds. The M1315 is 3" in diameter, about 36" long and weighs 11.25 pounds.
The rocket carries a set of barometric and accelerometer based altimeters to record flight data, control upper stage ignition and the deployment of parachutes. Both stages will have 12' parachutes.
Pat holds a level 3 certification from the Tripoli Rocketry Association.
